Discover your Whitby at the museum library and archives

Start your discovery in the Hugh Kendall Reading Room in Whitby Museum – wall-to-wall cabinets filled with books to fulfil a vicarious moment, satisfy historical research, or delve into our archive that is stacked high with Whitby historical collections!

Have you ever thought about looking into your family history? We have a wealth of resources to support your search including volunteers that can guide you through Find My Past and Ancestry.com. The cabinets are filled with books and documents including parish registers, pre-prepared family trees, detailed maps and books that can provide information about buildings, streets and yards in Whitby and surrounding villagers. To complement your search, access the Digital Whitby Gazette – here you will lose yourself in articles and stories; sending you down rabbit holes unearthing the past.

In addition, I have been out-and-about in the Whitby Community delivering presentations about people, places, events and traditions that surround this fascinating seaside town including Herring Fishing through the words of Dora Walker, WWII stories and Ravenscar: The Town That Never Was.

“Our residents really look forward to our sessions with Claire. They love this type of activity where they can reminisce and interact.” (The Mayfield, Dec 2023)

I have also invited schools in to experience our Library & Archive Workshop Tour. The pupils have been amazed at discovering family members in the Whitby Gazette, in awe of the towering archive collections and bewildered by bugs!

“Our children loved it! The orienteering task was a fun, engaging way to explore the library area.”  (Mrs Richardson, West Cliff School (Year 5) May 2024)
